Designed by the 7th Duke in the 1870s, the Rose Garden is over 150 years old. Originally a circular rosarium containing 1,800 roses, the historic layout of structured beds and pathways to stroll through makes the Rose Garden an unmissable part of the Formal Gardens. At the focal point stands a statue of a lady seated on the shoulders of centaur, dating from the 1920s. The piece was carefully cleaned, repaired and placed back as part of the restoration, alongside repair of the fountain jets and installation of Blenheim Oak benches, creating an idyllic place to pause and take in your surroundings.

The Rose Garden is currently undergoing a phased restoration programme to return the space to something much closer to its original 19th century design, and allow the space to be enjoyed as it was by the 7th Duke and his guests. This has involved cutting back many of the previously established roses and preparing the soil for no less than 200 new varieties of rose which will be planted in early 2027. As these are period varieties, it takes time for our rose grower suppliers to develop them, but the beautiful scene they will create once they arrive will be worth the wait!

In the mean-time, our Gardening Team have planted 8000 alliums in the Rose Garden which are now flowering beautifully, their giant purple pom-pom heads creating a striking scene. These tubers will help to break up the soil ready for the new varieties of rose to be planted next year. Later in the summer there will also be a lovely show of dahlias to admire.
