The original bronze framed roof lights were in need of repair. This involved scaffolding the red staircase and removing the roof light temporarily with a crane. It has been repaired, re-glazed and has a safety cage constructed around it to allow safe access for cleaning and maintenance.
It has also opened up previously inaccessible areas of the roof for safe regular maintenance without the need for scaffolding. A general guiding principle for Palace maintenance is “Roof First”: if we prioritise the roof, then the interior remains protected.
