The Secret Garden was created in 1954 when the 10th Duke of Marlborough sought a peaceful retreat for him and his family away from visitors. Designed as a quiet oasis of winding paths, gentle water features and sheltered corners, the space is different in character from the granduer of the rest of the Gardens.
Over time, the garden became overgrown but the 11th Duke began a thoughtful restoration. Pathways were reopened, new ponds were added and, for the first time, the Secret Garden was shared with visitors for the first time in 2004.
More recent restoration has seen the garden flourish into a space for all seasons, why not explore this peaceful corner yourself. With its calm pathways, varied planting and sense of seclusion, the Secret Garden offers a lovely spot to pause and enjoy your visit.
We are also working to create a new stump garden with birch and fern trees. This will add to the natural feel of the space and eventually evolve into a woodland garden, perfect for growing snowdrops and daffodils in shaded areas.
