Gilded Cage

Blenheim Art Foundation have unveiled a monumental sculpture by Chinese artist Ai Weiwei (b.1957) which has gone on long-term view in our gardens.

Gilded Cage (2017) addresses the international migrant crisis, and the physical and ideological constraints of life as a refugee.

Ai Weiwei was the first contemporary artist in the Palace’s 300-year history to exhibit at Blenheim, when Blenheim Art Foundation launched in 2014, so Gilded Cage will mark a welcome return by the artist.
