Winter is finally over and spring has sprung here in the Blenheim Palace Gardens. Find out more about our must-see areas this season, following some exciting projects that our Gardening Team have been working on. From our staple spring blooms to whole new areas of flora, there's something for everyone to enjoy.
The Water Terraces are currently adorned with enormous pots of tulips, in striking red and yellow. These set off their formal landscape setting beautifully. Be sure to also take a look at the rockery as you enter the Water Terraces - in the recent spring sunshine and after over a year of growth, this area has really come into its own with its Mediterranian hillside aesthetic and trees with the appearance of olive trees. Head further into the Gardens and venture off the beaten track along the new grass pathways to discover some of our wildflowers, including swarthes of little yellow primulas.
A staple of the spring season, many of our daffodils are still going strong on the Palace grounds. On the South Lawn the sea of gold petals creates the perfect springtime scene with the backdrop of the Palace, as well as in the grassy areas of the Arboretum. Daffodils have also recently been planted next to the new Rockery area in the Water Terraces, fringing the lakeside path. With their cheerful burst of colour they’re the perfect accompaniment to a seasonal family photo, or simply a sunny spring walk.
The Rose Garden will have a new look this spring, playing host to not only roses but also a stunning show of alliums, planted just before Christmas and set to flower in April or May. These tubers will help to break up the soil ahead of the Gardening Team planting 200 new varieties of rose early next year. Alliums flower into tall-standing stems with an enormous rounded ‘pom-pom’ head, and will create a striking picture in the Rose Garden during its current period of restoration. The varieties planted include the purple-headed Gladiator and the white Mount Everest - names that certainly suit their tall stature!
The Gardening Team have planted our Secret Garden with a whole host of new flowers that will soon be coming into bloom. These include hellebores, epimediums, bergenias, rhododendrons and drumstick primulas, which will provide a rich tapestry of spring colour in the area. These plants are all best suited to shadier areas, making them ideal blooms for the Secret Garden with its rich canopy of trees. Another feature here is our new stumpery walk, where birch trees, ferns and spiky, sculptural stumps create a characterful, fresh look. Take a longer walk on the wider Estate to spot scatterings of bluebells, which are at their most vibrant from mid-April to early-May.
