The Formal Gardens, reflect a journey through the styles of the ages. Surrounding the Palace, they include the majestic Water Terraces, the Duke's Private Italian Garden, the Churchill Memorial Garden and the beautifully delicate Rose Garden, which is currently being restored to it's original design.
If you'd like an escape look no further than the tranqulity of our Secret Garden, our worst kept secret the space is an oasis of unique plants, trees, pools, and streams dating back to the 10th Duke. Capability Brown’s transformation of the Parklands took 11 years. The landscape has remained largely unchanged over the past 250 years and his talent for creating the natural, idyllic style of English landscape means that often his work goes unnoticed, appearing as if it has always been there. Take the opportunity to capture the perfect selfie with the iconic Great Lake and Grand Bridge, once quoted by Lord Randolph Churchill as 'The Finest View in England'.
Expanding a further 2000 acres around the Formal Gardens is the vast Estate. A rich haven of flora and fauna, from honeybees to water voles, fawns to bats - magical moments await during your visit. The Park Perimetre walk looping the Estate has no shortage of natural beauty to discover. With the largest collection of ancient Oak trees in Europe, and one of the most biodiverse spaces in the country, the Estate is recognised as a Site of Specific Scientific Interest (SSSI). Make sure to come and experience the wonder of our green space.
Our Gardens are currently undergoing restoration to take them back to original 18th century designs. Our restoration plan spans 10 years and sees our Head Gardener Andy Mills, and his team, make extraordinary changes.
The work is well underway, with major areas of the Gardens being reshaped. This year the new rockery at our Water Terraces, and a new pathway through the freshly planted Rose Garden are due to be completed.
