Walk in Churchill's Footsteps

Our newest garden celebrates the life and legacy of our 'Greatest Briton' Sir Winston Churchill. It was opened on 9th June 2015 by Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Cornwall to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Churchill's death.

Just a short stroll away from the Formal Gardens, it is purposefully situated next to the Temple of Diana, built for the 4th Duke by Sir William Chambers and where Sir Winston proposed to his beloved Clementine in 1908. There are two plaques inside the temple to commemorate the event, unveiled in 1975 by Clementine, Lady Churchill herself.

A 90-metre path dotted with milestones representing the 90 years of his remarkable life winds past the sculptor Oscar Nemon's imposing bust of Sir Winston Churchill.

Alongside, there's an intertwining flower bed of Flanders poppies and cornflowers. Other plants include Magnolia Kobus, Magnolia 'Merrill', English Oak and Syringa Vulgaris; all of which were chosen with the 11th Duke.

The 11th Duke envisioned the garden alongside the acclaimed British landscape architect Kim Wilkie, who said, "Churchill was enormously fond of Blenheim Palace and it has been an honour to design a memorial for the great man within the Palace grounds he loved so much".
