The Water Terraces are among the most striking features of the Formal Gardens and remain a memorable part of the 9th Duke of Marlborough’s legacy. Designed to elevate the south front of the Palace, the Duke enlisted celebrated French landscape architect Achille Duchêne to bring his vision to life.
Created between 1925 and 1931, the terraces have often been compared to the Parterre d’Eau at Palace of Versailles, blending classical European inspiration with a scale and style perfectly suited to the Oxfordshire landscape. As you wander through, the balance of water, stonework and sweeping views makes this space especially rewarding to explore.
With plenty to discover, from the Bernini-inspired fountain—originally gifted to the 1st Duke—to the impressive wall of caryatid figures connecting the lower and upper levels. Don’t miss the pair of striking sphinxes standing guard at the steps; look closely and you may spot the Grecian features said to be modelled on Gladys, the 9th Duke’s second Duchess. With so many details to admire, the Water Terraces offer a beautifully atmospheric space.
