Centuries of landscape design and stories
The Gardens and Parkland at Blenheim Palace reflect a journey through the changing fashions of landscape design over the centuries. This ranges from the naturalistic sweeping lawns, trees and lake designed by 'Capability' Brown in the 1700s to the contrasting formal style of the majestic Water Terraces and the Duke's private Italian Garden. Other highlights include the beautiful Rose Garden, which is currently being restored to its original design, the picturesque Churchill Memorial Garden and the hidden oasis of plants that is the Secret Garden, perfect for a moment of quiet contemplation.
Expanding a further 2000 acres around the Gardens is the Blenheim Palace Parkland, transformed into an idyllic, naturalised English landscape by 'Capability' Brown. The iconic view of the Grand Bridge and Queen Pool lake was once described by Lord Randolph Churchill as "the finest view in England".

One eye on the past and a larger one on the future
The Formal Gardens
On the west front of the Palace are the elegant Water Terraces, designed by French landscape architect Achille Duchêne. With their formal symmetry, grand fountains and structured planting, they contrast dramatically with the view of 'Capability' Brown's naturalised landscape. The private Italian Garden, also designed by Duchêne in this style, can be viewed as you continue down the path alongside the vast South Lawn. Venture further to discover the elegant Rose Garden, the Secret Garden and more, eventually reaching the stunning Cascades waterfall.
The Walled Garden
Designed by Henry Wise in 1707, the Walled Garden is the oldest surviving part of the original gardens. The tall redbrick walls create the perfect environment for growing fresh fruit and vegetables. Still honouring its purpose today, our Kitchen Garden supplies the Palace's Cafes and Orangery Restaurant. The Walled Garden is also where many of our family activities are based, including the Marlborough Maze, Butterfly House and our Adventure Play.
The Great Estate
Our vast Estate is a rich haven of flora and fauna with no shortage of natural beauty to discover. It is also home to a diverse range of wildlife including deer, otters, water voles and bats as well as birds such as red kites, herons and owls. There is even a Blenheim species of honeybee. With the largest collection of ancient oak trees in Europe, and one of the most biodiverse spaces in the country, the Estate is recognised as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Explore the Estate with one of our walking routes, ranging from our Lakeside Walk to a seven kilometre loop through High Park.
