Actress Jo Joyner joined 13-year-old local resident Leo Burbidge on a training day here at Blenheim Palace ahead of his Mega Mile Challenge. Leo, who has cerebral palsy, is attempting to complete a mile course to raise money to buy a new minibus his school.
“I attend the Ormerod Base Unit at Marlborough School with 24 other students with disabilities and learning difficulties,” said Leo.
“We are trying to get a new minibus because the old one is falling to bits. This is very important to us as it takes us on trips and into the community with our wheelchairs and teaching assistants. This will be a huge challenge for me as I have cerebral palsy and find walking difficult. When I was small doctors told me I probably wouldn’t walk at all.” he added.
We are fully supporting Leo’s challenge after he sent a letter to the Duke of Marlborough asking if he would be willing to host the event.
Actress Jo Joyner, who is starring as the head teacher in the new Channel 4 drama series Ackley Bridge, has been a long time friend of Leo and his family and wanted to show her support by joining him for his practice run.
“Leo is one of the kindest and most determined people I know and I was delighted when I got the invite to come along to help him train,” she said. "The minibus will provide a vital link to the community for Leo and his classmates and is something that will literally be life-changing for pupils for years to come. I am hoping everyone will get involved in this great event and come along on 1st July to roar him on” she added.
