What's On: The Independent Woodstock Literary Festival
15 September to 19 September 2010
Sponsored by The Independent and The Independent on Sunday, Woodstock has become the UK's ultimate boutique literary festival - and the first major event of Britain's autumn literary season. This year, speakers include Philip Pullman, Michael Frayn, Antonia Fraser, Howard Jacobson, Bernhard Schlink, Peter Hennessy, Steven Berkoff, Colin Dexter, Bettany Hughes, Margaret Elizabeth Forster, Ann Leslie, Daisy Goodwin, Helena Attlee, Polly Toynbee, Matt Ridley and many more!
Alternating each day between Blenheim Palace and the adjoining historic town of Woodstock, the Festival offers beautiful settings. Its venues range from ancient hotels, inns and townhouses to the majestic interiors of Blenheim Palace. Blenheim Palace boasts the most magnificent festival backdrop in England. It's a World Heritage Site, set among stunning gardens, lakes and landscaped Parks where festival-goers can wander, read and talk. The Palace was the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill in 1874, and is now the home of the 11th Duke and Duchess of Marlborough.
The Festival's black tie dinner in the Orangery at Blenheim Palace will take place on Friday 17th September, in the presence of HRH The Duke of Gloucester.
There will be a prestigious programme of key events with the Festival's new partners - The British Library, Compton Verney Museum and Gallery, and The University of Worcester.
Thousands flock to the Festival every year for a heady mix of national and international speakers, controversial debates, lectures, discussion and book launches, together with pub quiz, literary lunches and teas, gin and wine tastings at The Feathers, the Festival's official hotel partner. These are opportunities to meet and talk with authors, novelists, critics, journalists and commentators in a relaxed and informal atmosphere. The Independent Woodstock Literary Festival looks forward to welcoming you to Woodstock and Blenheim Palace in September.
