This talk and tour outlines the roles of various members of the Marlborough family in a number of conflicts, including the Seven Years War (1756-1763), the Boer War in South Africa (1899-1902), and the First and Second World Wars. From the 1870s to the 1900s, some 300 British aristocrats married American heiresses for their wealth and they became known as the Dollar Princesses. Bringing with them generous dowries, many of these women helped save numerous stately homes from ruin.
Blenheim Palace was no exception to this.

This talk offers an insight into the life of railroad heiress, Consuelo Vanderbilt who married the 9th Duke of Malborough in 1895. From her life as a child of the Gilded Age to her entrance into English aristocracy this narrative experience is a voyage from 5th Avenue, N.Y.C. and Newport, R.I. to Woodstock, Oxfordshire.

The Blenheim tapestries are outstanding works of art, commissioned by the 1st Duke of Marlborough to illustrate his significant victories.  They are exceptional in the quality of their craftsmanship, their variety, their composition and their well preserved vibrant colours. All of the panels have magnificent decorative borders, and this powerpoint presentation is designed to reveal the carefully observed details, not always accessible when standing behind the ropes.  This talk and tour will include additional textiles such as carpets and captured standards, also in the Blenheim Palace collection.
