The Water Terraces

The Water Terraces

Blenheim Palace’s beautiful Water Terraces were created between 1925 and 1931. A feat of planning and construction, the three terraces are reminiscent, on a smaller scale, of the Parterre d’Eau at Versailles.

Don't miss:

Found in the Formal Gardens, "Untitled" by German artist Georg Baselitz is a contemporary response to Antonio Canova’s sculpture The Three Graces (1814-1817), reinventing the iconic mythological trio. Unlike Canova’s depiction, Baselitz’s maidens are monumental, rough-hewn and faceless, their bodies carved in a manner which recalls African sculpture, evoking the primitivism of early Modernists such as Picasso and Braque. This creates an interesting dialogue, between a classic motif of Western European art history, and a style inspired by non-Western art. Elegant giants, they shed new light onto timeless artistic subjects and now keep watch over the Palace grounds.
